Without the use of GPS, the user will be able to see his location as well as the location of his friends."The feature, will allow the user to share location information with others. One will just need a data connection to use the service and download the latest version of Google Maps and they can start using the feature," Google has features like SMS Channel where one can SMS his search query and get the answers through messages. This includes options where he can get updates on the chosen subjects like paddy rates, market movements and latest news.

Not that I want everyone to know where I am at all times, but I wouldn't mind a map where I can see where my friends are. Why not? To me it's cool and another powerful example of what the iPhone can do. And if you hate the idea you can always deny Maps the use of location services or turn them off all together.
